Student Voice Initiative
09-10-SF-01

School: John Martin Jr. High

The Student Voice Initiative is meant to encourage students to bring themselves their histories and experiences to school. The student newspaper and spoken word videos will help create feelings of acceptance and belonging in the school community. We want to put power into the hands of the kids so they feel they can help shape, and succeed in, the school setting.

Promoting a Peaceful Community through an Integrated Music Program
09-10-SF-04

School: Auburn Drive High School
Board: HRSB
Project Leader: Anne Sangster

This project will teach students with special needs to play the Choirchimes (hand-held chime instruments which produce a sound similar to that of traditional hand bells). When they have learned how to play, they will be able to perform for the other high school students during Diversity Week and in traditional school concerts, to teach the musical skills they have learned to interested mainstream students, and to participate with mainstream students in joint performances for the school and community.

Building Bridges for the Future
09-10-SF-05

School: Ocean View/Nelson Whynder Schools
Board: HRSB
Project Leader: Tracey White

Beginning in January, students from Ocean View and Nelson Whynder schools would be chosen for this unique project which would see students come together for several activities to get to know each other in a non-threatening and fun way. The idea would be to create an understanding and begin connections that will hopefully continue through until they reach high school.

Being Cool Rules!

Our objective is to teach our primary to grade eight students how to deal effectively with conflict issues such as anger, bullying, teasing and criticism. This will be carried out with the help of the “Be Cool” program.
