AEC Pledges to be a caring, peaceful community
12-13/SF/03

School:  Antigonish Education Centre
Board:  Strait Regional School Board
Project Coordinator:  Kim Grant

Using the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? By Carol McLeod, the guidance counselor introduced the concept to all classes.  The students really caught on to the metaphor (filling buckets basically means that when we do something nice, either through our actions or our words, we are filling other people’s buckets – however, when we witness their joy, we also feed good and therefore our own bucket is also being filled) and began to use the language and look for ‘bucket filling’ actions and words.  The goal of this project is to take a positive behavior and language approach to creating a caring, peaceful community within our school.

Following the Compass
12-13/SF/05

School:  Breton Education Centre
Board:  Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board
Project Coordinator:  Irene Grezel

The word compassion starts with compass.  I believe that one of the most promising tools for building compassion in my school and community is not a tool, but rather an approach whose focus is on restoring relationships.  Nova Scotia is a leader in Restorative practices in the Justice system and has started to integrate this approach in many schools.  The more people and organizations who understand the concept of restorative practices/approaches the more likely it is that the approach will be adapted and will be successful.  Our groups is requesting funding for resources which can e shared with students, staff, parents and community members by establishing a Restorative Practices library.  We have started to compile a list of resource people from our community and beyond who we can contact for information/support.
